What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a complementary or alternative medical treatment method developed by the German doctor Samuel Hahnemann in the 1790s, which differs from traditional medical methods with the theories of ‘Like cures like’ and ‘Minimum dose law’.

In order to better understand what homeopathy is, it is useful to look at the discovery of homeopathy…

Hahnemann was a doctor born in Germany in 1755 and trained in medicine. In the process leading to the discovery of homeopathy, Hahnemann’s dissatisfaction with medical practices and his search for alternative treatment methods played a major role. Hahnemann earned a living by translating medical and chemical texts. In 1790, while translating William Cullen’s ‘Materia Medica’ into German, he was intrigued by Cullen’s descriptions of the cinchona tree (Cinchona officinalis). Cullen stated that cinchona bark treated malaria. Unsatisfied with Cullen’s explanations, Hahnemann decided to try the effects of henna bark on himself. He observed that he developed malaria-like symptoms after taking the henna bark. This experiment made Hahnemann think of the principle of ‘similia similibus curentur’ (‘like cures like’).

Similia Similibus Curentur Principle:

Hahnemann developed the idea that the medicine used to treat a disease can produce similar symptoms in a healthy person. This principle forms the basis of homeopathy. According to Hahnemann, substances that could produce symptoms similar to the symptoms of the disease could be effective in treating the disease.

Potentisation and Dilution:

Hahnemann realised that drugs could be toxic in high doses. Therefore, he developed the method of sequential dilution and shaking (potentisation) to make drugs safe and effective. With this method, the side effects were reduced while the effect of the medicine was increased.

Why Homeopathy

Although today’s people are forced to live a life under chronic diseases, misinformation and unhealthy living conditions, thanks to homeopathy, the foundations of which were laid more than 200 years ago, humanity will perhaps have the chance to return to the factory settings as on the first day.

Homeopathy, Samuel Hahnemann found the principle of ‘like cures like’ based on a sentence he read one day during the translation of a book, and as a result of years of labour, he presented homeopathy to the whole world as a treatment method that has been placed in a scientific framework.

Homeopathy treatment aims to support the body’s self-healing ability by using very low doses of natural substances to treat the symptoms of the disease. Homeopathic treatment usually consists of several stages and includes a holistic assessment of the patient. Steps on how a homeopathic treatment is done in general:

How to Have a Homeopathy Treatment Step by Step

1. Initial Consultation

Detailed Anamnesis (Medical History): The homeopath questions the patient’s medical history, current symptoms, lifestyle, eating habits and emotional state in detail. In Dr Neslihan Gülmez clinic, a comprehensive anamnesis consisting of approximately 10 pages is applied. After filling out the anamnesis form given to the patient, an assistant interview is conducted, and then a doctor interview is conducted to ensure that all information is obtained with complete accuracy.
Holistic Approach: The homeopath assesses the patient not only in terms of physical symptoms but also in terms of mental and emotional states.
Customisation of Symptoms: The homeopath tries to determine when the symptoms started, how they develop and which factors increase or decrease the symptoms.

2. Selection of Remedy (Homeopathic Medicine)

Similia Similibus Curentur Principle: The homeopath chooses the substance that produces symptoms most similar to the patient’s symptoms. According to this principle, like cures like. In summary, he tries to choose a homeopathic remedy that will respond to all the symptoms the patient has.
Repertoire and Use of Materia Medica: The homeopath uses the homeopathic repertoire and Materia Medica to analyse the patient’s symptoms and determine the appropriate remedy.

3. Dosage and Potency Selection

Potentisation: Homeopathic medicines are highly diluted and shaken at each dilution step. This process reduces the toxicity of the remedy while increasing its therapeutic effect. In homeopathy, remedies (medicines) are produced in various potencies, there are medicines with lower and higher dilution ratios such as C30, C200, C12.
Appropriate Potency: The homeopath determines the appropriate potency (degree of dilution) and dosage depending on the patient’s condition and severity of symptoms.

4. Treatment and Monitoring

Medication Administration: The patient is given the prescribed homeopathic remedy. Remedies can usually be in the form of sugar granules or diluted drop solution.
Observation and Monitoring: The homeopath closely monitors the treatment process and keeps track of how the patient’s symptoms change. The patient’s condition is assessed at regular follow-up appointments.

5. Adjustments during the course of treatment

Feedback and Evaluation: The patient’s response to the treatment is observed. If there is no significant improvement in symptoms or if new symptoms appear, the homeopath reassesses the treatment plan and choice of remedy.
Drug Modification or Adjustment: When necessary, the homeopath may change the dosage, potency or type of medicine.

6. Outcomes and Long Term Management

Improvement of Symptoms: Ideally, the patient’s symptoms are reduced or completely eliminated. In addition to managing symptoms, homeopathy aims to improve overall health and well-being.

As you can see, the above is a step-by-step overview of what can happen in a homeopathic treatment. Since each patient’s condition is unique, the homeopathic remedies chosen and the recovery times vary. In addition, the patient’s attention and dedication to self-monitoring are among the factors that increase the success of the treatment.

What happens during a visit to a homeopath?

The duration of your first visit to the homeopath will be very different from the visits to the doctor you are used to. In homeopathy, the patient is cured, not the disease, and in order for the treatment to be holistic, the homeopath will ask you a lot of questions about your mental, physical and emotional state. In addition to this, a thorough anamnesis will be taken, including your family history and dreams, among other things. In addition, the homeopathic doctor will want to have all the information he or she needs to treat you, including any tests you have had done and any other tests that have been ordered.

Which diseases and conditions respond well?

In terms of diseases treated with homeopathy, childhood diarrhoea, otitis media (ear infection), asthma, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, menopausal symptoms (such as hot flushes), pain, allergies, upper respiratory tract infections, painful muscles. It also specialises in colds and flu. e. Several studies suggest that homeopathy may have a role in relieving symptoms and improving quality of life among cancer patients.

Because homeopathic remedies are diluted, they usually have no side effects. However, some people have reported feeling worse shortly after starting a homeopathic treatment. Homeopaths interpret this as the body temporarily stimulating symptoms while making an effort to improve health. In people with serious illnesses, this temporary aggravation of symptoms can be very harmful. If you have a serious physical or mental illness, you should only use homeopathy under the guidance of a trained practitioner and inform everyone in your healthcare team about the homeopathic remedies you are taking.

Sufficiently diluted homeopathic remedies are not known to interact with conventional medicines, but if you are currently taking prescription medicines, you should consult your doctor if you are considering using homeopathic remedies.
